Silicon Carbide is very well known as being used for an effective armor protection. SiC's extreme hardness and mechanical strength are two key properties that make it favored material for this application. The third one is SiC's light weight that limits the impact of armor weight on user performance (mobility and fuel consumption).
The ceramic components can be densified by various forming techniques like hot pressing, dry pressing or slip casting. The appropriate sintering step afterwards enables to achieve those unique properties. Typical components made from SiC are plates for body armor and tiles for vehicle protection.
Saint-Gobain is offering a variety of tailor made products for armor application.
